When it comes to a business, it is very important that you form relationships. You will need to create and keep relationships that will help you periodically throughout the life of your business. Building and keeping business relationships will help you succeed but damaging relationships or leaving poor and broken business relationships can hurt your business and your reputation.
Many people have trouble with business relationships simply because they don’t know the rules. There isn’t really a handbook for this sort of thing and it can be hard to know what to do and what not to do. In addition, there are many different types of business relationships and different situations that you will have to face. Just like in any relationship, there are some things you just have to feel out as you go but there are other things that you can practice, study and prepare for to help give you an edge. Here are some tips to help you with creating and keeping business relationships.
Here are some important factors to keep in mind when building business relationships:
1. Remember that first impressions count.
2. Don’t take the easy way over the right way.
3. Remember that it’s not just what you do but how you do it.
4. Just like any relationship, there will be give and take.
5. Trust works both ways, even in a business relationship.
6. Communication is key.
7. If things go sour, still keep it professional.

It’s important that you remember first impressions count. When meeting your potential business associate for the first time, whether online or offline, you need to be sure you present yourself properly and professionally. Wear nice, clean clothing. Speak in a confident tone and be sure of yourself. Show that you are confident in your position but be honest. If presented with something you are not familiar with, admit it rather than lying when you don’t have a clue what you are talking about.
Don’t try to take the easy way out of situations over the right way. Even if the right way is harder or may cause conflict, it will gain you more respect that trying to take the east way. Remember that every relationship has give and take. Don’t be the one always trying to take, take, take and not give back to the partnership yet at the same time, be able to recognize if you are being taken advantage of and if you are the one always giving and never getting back in return.
Remember the importance of communication. If your business partner or client knows and understands your situation, they are much more likely to compromise or work with you. Avoiding phone calls, emails and other correspondence simply because you do not know what to say or are afraid of saying the wrong thing will lead your client wondering and possibly thinking the worst. Lies can also destroy the relationship and the reputation of your business. Just fess up to the truth and you will gain much more respect and likely keep your relationship. If the truth ends the relationship, at least your business will still have its pride and tact in place.
Remember that while trust is important in a relationship, you both have to give a little when you make the decision to work together. You cannot demand trust from someone when you have none to give of your own. There are ways to protect yourself, such as with contracts and legal agreements. Aside from these precautions, you have to trust the person a bit and hope that things turn out for the better. Unwarranted distrust leads to bitterness and skepticism which can harm a business relationship.
If you find that your business relationship is not working out and you need to end it or the other party decides to end it, you should still keep it professional. Do you fall to insults or name-calling even if the other party does and try not to take things personally? Sometimes business partnerships don’t work out or people do not mesh well together. This does not necessarily mean that you are a bad person.
Remember that everyone is human, no matter how perfect they may seem from the exterior. Mistakes happen and unforeseen event occur. Try to be understanding and treat people to same what that you would want to be treated.
